Fall

Leaves on the grass

You can feel the change in the air as one season is coming to an end and another is beginning.

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. The cooler weather, the changing leaves, and the brisk mornings are comforting to me.

This year in Upstate NY, we are well on our way to seeing the leaves change. With 2020 feeling a little bit like a time warp, some may be surprised at how quickly the leaves are changing, but we’re right on track.

Last year, I created this interactive map highlighting the average time each county can expect to see the leaves change. This is a very rough estimate since some counties have varying elevations and shapes.

Tap or click on a county to see it’s average peak fall foliage time. You can also use the search feature to search for your county.

Weather and elevation has an effect on how quickly or slowly the leaves change in your area. Higher elevation usually begin to see the change first because it gets colder quicker than lower elevations.

Typically, cooler weather will help keep the process moving along. Warm spells usually prolong the change.
