Voter turnout by county

Vote Buttons and American Flags

As Americans head to the polls, I was curious to see which counties turnout the highest and least number of registered voters.

This data visualization was one of the hardest and most labor-intensive projects I have done. I checked every state’s election website and sometimes a state’s county website to collect the election data for the 2018 and 2020 elections.

One of the biggest challenges was finding the best way to standardize the data since every county or state handles elections and election results data differently. For some counties or states, I used the voter turnout and election results for the top race if the information was readily available.

The map is designed to provide a very basic overview of voter turnout in each county. In the future, I plan on adding additional election years to provide better context. Counties in red had lower voter turnout than blue counties. Kansas does not provide county-level voter turnout information. Mississippi does not provide voter turnout data.

To see voter turnout, click or tap on a county or the search box under the legend. You can also toggle between the 2018 Midterms, 2020 General, and Average between those election years.
