Every year, millions of Americans have to turn their clocks forward and back for Daylight Saving Time.

Over the years, the twice-a-year ritual has come under scrutiny. According to a YouGov poll, 54% of Americans would support ending Daylight Saving Time.

In the spring, Americans turn the clocks ahead for Daylight Saving Time and in the fall turn their clocks back at the end of Daylight Saving Time.

YouGov found that Baby Boomers preferred to “spring forward” more than any other generation. Both Millennials and Gen X’ers had varying preferences to either turning the clocks forward and back. Regardless, all age groups preferred to have longer days.

Why do we practice Daylight Saving Time?

According to the Department of Energy, we change our clocks to reduce energy consumption.

By giving people an extra hour when it is warmer, the idea is that people will spend more time outside and less time using energy inside. Various studies have raised questions on whether or not this is an effective way to reduce energy in the United States.
