Raising money to help the hungry

Volunteers packing food at a food bank

September is Hunger Action Month and my local food bank is trying to collect 30,000 meals in 30 days.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, millions are going hungry, and there an increased need for food. Many local food banks have noticed an increase in demand since the pandemic started earlier this year. I currently have a fundraising goal of $300 to help my local community deal with food insecurity and hunger.

According to Feeding America, more than 54 million people, including 18 million children, may experience food insecurity because of COVID-19. The following map shows the states that are most vulnerable to food insecurity. With that said, just because a state or local community doesn’t experience a high level of food insecurity, it doesn’t mean there isn’t a need.

To see each state’s food insecurity rate, move your move over the hexagon or use the search field to display the state’s value.

If you would like to help, you can donate to my fundraiser or, if you are local, you can donate items directly to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York.

Here are some of the most needed items:

  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Peanut Butter
  • Canned Tuna and chicken
  • Cereal
  • Pasta and Rice
  • Canned Soups and Meals
