Highlights from my Florida trip

Beach on Sanibel Island

I know I should not be impressed that last week was my first time since working full time I took a one-week vacation. In a way, it took me a decade working full-time to take a full week off.

It was nice to be able to get away from the cold and snow in Upstate New York. The trip was a few weeks in the making, initially planned for January but due to COVID-19, winter weather, and other factors, I decided to hold off until things settled down.

Luckily, my dad and I purchased the plane tickets in the middle of February before prices began to skyrocket. We also lucked out when we were leaving since it was incredibly windy following a winter storm that moved through the area on March 12 and canceled a number of flights heading down to Florida.

The weather during the week was in the 70s and 80s with occasional bursts of humidity. The humidity broke whenever the wind picked up, which was frequent in the morning and some evenings. It was generally sunny with only one of the mornings where it rained a little. Overall, solid week weather-wise!

Here are some of the bigger highlights from my trip. Click on an image to enlarge.

1. Sanibel Island

The island is full of wildlife, scenic beaches, and bike and walking paths. It is a busy island with a number of tourists and locals enjoying sunny beaches and walking trails. The island was a little busier than normal since it was spring break, but it was still enjoyable.

2. Edison Ford Winter Estates Museum

I never realized how much of a role Thomas Edison and Henry Ford played in southwest Florida. The museum covers the accomplishments of both men and allows you to look at Edison and Ford’s winter estates. You can also tour the lab where Edison and Ford worked.

Our tour guide Tim was great and provided some interesting tidbits about Edison, Ford, and the area. Highly recommend it if you are traveling in the area.

3. Everglades City

My dad and I did an airboat tour of the Everglades. It was my first time in the Everglades and going on an airboat ride. We saw a few alligators and other wildlife. The mangrove trees were cool seeing how the roots grow above the water.

I was also able to relax and spend some time away from technology, which is always a welcome change. Here are some other cool photos from the trip. The first is a ground owl, which is endangered in Florida. The second is a photo of the largest banyan tree in the continental US!
