Would you pay using an implanted microchip?

I usually do not shy away from new technology and will generally try things early on if I feel it fits my lifestyle.

I may draw the line at using an implant in my hand to pay for items at the store.

I came across an article about how people are getting a microchip implanted in one of their hands to wirelessly pay for items at a store. It does sound convenient, but there is something about it that makes me hesitant.

The microchip implant made by Walletmor works just like how you pay with your mobile device. Instead of holding your phone over the payment console, you would use your wrist or hand instead.

According to Walletmor, the implant is about the size of a small safety pin and uses a passive NFC transponder to send your payment information.

“You can’t lose or forget your Walletmor payment implant. It can’t fall out or be taken from your wallet. The implant cannot be scanned, photographed or hacked, like debit or credit cards, to exploit information printed on them. The implant is literally always at hand, allowing us to make payments even in situations where we wouldn’t have our wallets on us.”

I am not alone in my concern about the use of microchip implants.

A survey by Pew Research Center found that 56% of people believe getting a computer chip implanted in your brain to process information more quickly and accurately would be a bad idea for society. Only 13% of those surveyed thought it would be a good idea.

The idea was more accepted if people had some control over the device. According to Pew, 60% of Americans thought it would be more acceptable if people could choose when to turn the device on and off. A little more than half said it would be more acceptable if implants could be put into place without surgery.
