The joys of doing things alone

Person eating alone at a restaurant.

Humans are social beings, but there is a unique joy in doing things alone.

Doing things alone can help give you confidence, self-acceptance, and a better understanding of who you are. Sprinkling this alone time is such a blessing that you can give yourself.

You may even meet new people in the process. I have.

Do you take yourself out on dates??? 😊😊

We do not need to wait for others to begin living our lives. The only thing that holds us back is fear and instead of fearing this alone time, embrace it and live it. Trust me, if you lean into it with your entire being you will not regret it. You’ll wonder why you have not done it sooner.

We have a choice every day on whether we want to live comfortably or happy. Sometimes they overlap and other times they could not be farther from one another. Being vulnerable allows us to connect better with ourselves and also with others. I believe it is one of the important foundations of relationships.

Here are some things I have observed when doing things alone:

  • People do not really care that you are doing an activity by yourself. One of the biggest reasons people do not do more things alone is because they are self-conscious about what others will think. If you want to do something do not let “going alone” hold you back. People are not as judgmental as you think.
  • Doing things alone allows you to decide how you feel about a certain activity without the opinions and thoughts of others. By trying new things you can determine whether or not you genuinely enjoy it or dislike it without the opinions or influence of others.
  • Try not to use your phone as a crutch and be fully present in your activity. Use your phone sparingly and be present. This will make you feel more fulfilled and boost your confidence that you do not need to use an external device or person to do things you enjoy.
  • Doing things alone opens you to new connections and opportunities. There have been so many instances that I have been out and about doing something I enjoy and meeting someone new. By being fully present, you stand out and make yourself seem more approachable.

As with anything new, start out small and work your way up to make yourself more comfortable.

When was the last you treated yourself and took yourself out on a date?
